CIJA Report

As Jewish authors, we understand that genocide denial is a uniquely dangerous act…Motivated by deep concern about the ongoing genocidal violence levied against Palestinians and escalations of violence perpetrated by the state of Israel in the region, we reject the proposition that this violence can in any way be justified in the name of Jewish safety. Genocide makes no one safe and CIJA does not speak for all Jews in its claims to be a representative Jewish voice in Canada.

Description

This report shines a light on how the current discourse about antisemitism in Canada serves to manufacture consent for Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

By analyzing the public statements, social media posts, and media releases from Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), this report reveals how CIJA’s operates to actively support the state of Israel and its genocidal campaign.

Our Findings

  1. 1CIJA promotes anti-Palestinian racism through the idea that unrestricted violence against Palestinians is necessary for Jewish safety.
  2. 2CIJA promotes anti-Palestinian racism through a false narrative linking the movement for Palestinian rights and the rise of antisemitism in Canada.
  3. 3CIJA engages in antisemitism by defining Jewish identity as Zionist and anti-Palestinian through its persistent exclusion of large segments of Jewish people and voices from a singularly presented “Jewish community.”
  4. 4CIJA’s advocacy for the erosion of free speech, academic freedom, and increased securitization and criminalization is used to silence criticism of Israel and the genocide of Palestinians.

The results of this study should deeply dissuade the public, educational institutions, the media, the government, non-profit organizations, and individuals from relying on CIJA to define antisemitism, from engaging CIJA on issues related to Israel and Palestine, and from relying on CIJA to address issues relating to Jewish people in Canada.

Jewish people in Canada are not a monolith and no group can credibly claim to speak for “the” Jewish community. Politicians, school boards, law enforcement and others need to understand who it is they rely upon to speak about antisemitism and whether these groups uphold basic principles of antiracism.
